For anyone who wants to tell me that poverty and education create crime: James Holmes came from a well-to-do San Diego neighborhood and was a candidate for a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Shut up.

Expect neither President Obama nor former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) to go hard on gun control in the wake of the Aurora shooting, despite the fact that they might have been able to agree on controlling assault weapons if either found it beneficial.

A fascinating account of the increase in the use of Spanish on the campaign trail. English-only advocates will demand that this is counter-balanced with making sure that all Spanish-speaking voters learn English eventually. I generally agree with that.

Broadband and wireless companies continue to argue over how much federal spectrum each one should get. They’re acting as if nobody realized until now that both types of companies need spectrum. Sigh.

On the list of Republicans skipping the national convention: Former President George W. Bush. Two years ago, I would have chalked this up to self-embarrassment. Now I’m not sure.

More people catch on to the fact that Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is crazy. I want Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX) included in all future discussions of her, because he’s the same kind of crazy.

The Congressional Research Service finds no long-term negative economic impact from letting upper-income tax cuts expire. Neither does anyone who knows what large corporations do with tax cuts.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) wants Republicans to come up with their own spending plans. Yeah, so do we.

Congress freezes the minimum wage in the territory of American Samoa. At least their non-voting congressional delegate acknowledges the role of the corporations in the territory in preventing further freezes.

Canada’s Northwest Territories aim to reap the benefits of a large shale oil deposit that has yet to be developed. This kind of development is how every part of Canada, save Ontario and Quebec, makes money.

Seeing that Russia and China’s role at the United Nations makes action on Syria difficult, someone actually suggests working outside the UN! Genius! (Also, make no mistake: Russia and China are doing this to flex muscle, not because they like Syria.)

The same thing that happened to every austerity-heavy nation in Europe happens in Spain. Yawn. Tell me something new.
